Best 7

This is the time when petal power and scents of spring really come into their own.

The RiverTribe team has been out and about taking stock.

Here are seven of the best.

While the big fashion brands will always be sought after by the

RiverTribe fashion mavens, it is the small independent boutiques which often produce eye-catching clothes which don’t require a bank loan.

Here RiverTribe Editor Linda Duberley chooses seven of the best.

Nova Fortuny

Nova Fortuny is owned and run by Dianne Yarlett and, while at the far end of the RiverTribe beat, it is worth the short drive, especially since parking is relatively easy and the charms of the Fallow Deer coffee bar are many. She stocks the French Canadian label Joseph Ribkoff and the Barcelona-based label Isabel de Pedro. Her costume jewellery collection is extensive with Pranella, designed by a mother and daughter team from Newcastle, a stand-out brand while the Australian hand-bag label, Olga Berg, is incredible value.

Bazar has a loyal following in this area of Barnes but is a largely undiscovered gem when it comes to other RiverTribers living further afield. It is owned by Lucy Wadie and her mother, Caroline, who run it with an able team of assistants. It is particularly strong on accessories, carrying a diverse range of hats and bags, both in the winter and summer. Its Coco cashmere range is a big hit with my visiting friends, some of whom are very picky when it comes to their wardrobes. A key item for this summer is a wonderful straw hat by the Australian brand, Helen Kaminski - pricey but an investment buy.

Nina’s is an independent lifestyle boutique run by Nina Dimond-Brown. It has a clear Scandinavia style, probably because Nina herself hails from Finland. She sells clothes, gifts, accessories and homeware. Although it is principally a clothing retailer it is a little bit like walking into a rather Nordic-looking art gallery. Principle labels are True Royal, Devotion, Masscob and Heartmade. On sale right now are beautiful belts by Heartmade and a shocking pink clutch bag by Rocio. I love the blue brocade pants, but at just under £300 it is a purchase worth careful consideration. If finding an outfit that few people are likely to have is important, this is the shop for you.

Yvonne Damant has owned and run this shop for the past 25 years. Previously she ran a shop on the Quadrant in Richmond town centre. I am of an age where I can remember buying clothes in the original shop. The memory of a black and white organza Dolce and Gabbana evening coat still remains with me as does a John Galliano skirt, produced by the designer shortly after he left art college, which only bit the dust last year due to moths. She designs her own line but does stock Rick Owen, a serious investment often made by the fashion intelligentsia. Other labels include Ann de Meulemeester, Rundholz and Hache. This is the place to go if you have a major date, a red carpet appearance or a wedding likely to hit the social pages.

Rebecca Cargill has four shops, of which her White Hart Lane branch is one. Rebecca stocks all the key designers for busy women executives, time-poor mums (with some extra cash) and several local celebrities. Among favourites with the local fashionistas are DKNY, Velvet, Diane Von Furstenberg and Marc Jacobs. She also stocks my favourite perfume, Amber by Laboratory which, without fail, always draws compliments wherever I go.

Marco Tripoli

7 White Hart Lane, Barnes

London, SW13 0PX

020 7240 5515

Without a shadow of a doubt this is the best value independent boutique in the area. Marco spent sixteen years at the top end of the rag trade working for several key Italian designers before opening his own shop. He knows his stuff and this is why he manages to stock his shop with great clothes and accessories at very reasonable prices. A particular favourite with the American Women’s Club for which he runs trunk shows locally, his following extends to discerning shoppers in the US.

Feather and Stitch, owned by Fiona Sanderson, is a personal favourite of mine since it stocks the Danish label Day Birger et Mikkelsen. Other key brands include Des Petits Hauts, for whom Feather and Stitch is the largest stockist in the UK, DL Jeans and 360 Degrees Cashmere. It stocks other unexpected brands and is a destination for those with an eye for distinctive fashion. Strong points are its jewellery and scarves. It is a favoured destination for locally-based stylists.
